1. They understand your vision.
The ideal designer will understand your vision and be willing to work closely with you to achieve your goals. If you’re neglected and treated as though you’re “just another paying customer”, you probably are.
2. They are willing to answer any questions, no matter how big or small.
They say there’s “no such thing as a stupid question”, the same rule applies here. It is important for your designer to remember that you are not an expert in their field (that’s what you hired them for), and that you will likely not understand all the designer-speak and may need clarification on some things.
3. They understand form vs function.
While they may design a website that looks great, does it do everything you need it to? Design is important but it needs to follow functionality. Your designer should understand branding and marketing, and know how to keep it consistent and fresh.
4. They are willing to make changes to a design.
Whether these changes are an added extra or part of the initial quote is irrelevant. You don’t want a designer that puts together concepts for you but refuses to continue if you’re not happy with them. Changes to a design are normal and designers need to account for this. You are paying them to create a design for you, therefore you need to be happy with it.
5. They are always looking to update their skills.
Design is like fashion, it is constantly evolving. As we develop new technology we also develop new ways to design. A good designer keeps up with trends and knows how best to utilise them. They ensure their skills are up to date and are always looking to expand on their existing skillset.
